The Real Happy Meal – Optimum Wellness

I consider myself an evolving omnivore; a lifelong student of nutrition. I love good tasting, healthy, and nutritious food! In the last 20 years I have tried and experimented with macrobiotics, veganism, vegetarianism, pescatarianism and today I really know what works for me. I now put more energy and intention on eating more locally and sustainably; doing my best to eat clean and conscious. When it comes to well-being and the perfect diet, there is no one size fits all way to eat. We are blessed with bio-chemical individuality. To a certain extent you need to be somewhat of an adventurer and investigator to discover what feeds you best. Keeping a food journal along with how you feel physically and emotionally can certainly help you discover which foods really work for you and which ones make you a little crazy, cranky or just plain uncomfortable.

The Mediterranean diet is a great place to start. This diet emphasizes non-inflammatory foods including wild caught fish, nuts, legumes, olive oil, colorful vegetables, whole grains, local fruits, and to a lesser extent, humanely raised and harvested poultry, pork and beef; oh, and of course, wine (or red grape juice). The Mediterranean style of eating is supported in the scientific literature. Evidence shows that a Mediterranean diet may help lower the risk for heart disease, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease and certain cancers. Naturally rich in fiber, antioxidants, and healthy fats, going Mediterranean should cover most all of your New Year’s healthy diet intentions.  Calorie–wise, it’s all about portions, no matter what type of diet regime you follow.   A recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine showed that the Mediterranean diet was more effective for weight loss than a low fat diet. Hopefully you’re feeling hungry for great vitality and well-being and you are inspired to make this year the beginning of a sustainable journey towards the ever-evolving you!

What is your present diet…way of living? Diet comes from the Greek word diaita, which means, way of life. Clinically and personally I have seen that it is nearly impossible to sustain and thrive with a healthy diet alone; that is, in the absence of a healthy way of life. They are meant to work together. A healthy diet is integrally connected to a healthy outlook, positive daily rituals and experiences of movement, service, community, intimacy, friendship creativity and purpose. Almost magically when your world is intentionally full with these practices your diet tends to be full of nourishment and satisfaction. Simply put, when your life is sweeter you tend to want less sugar.

To make good on your healthy eating intentions this year consider stocking your day and life with these primary forms of nourishment before you stock your fridge and pantry: deep friendships, unbridled play, purposeful work and/or service, spiritual connection and community (no additives, no preservatives and nothing artificial).

To thrive each and every day you have an opportunity to put these empowering practices to work for you:

-Feed your head first, your body second, and your emotions last. Whole-food nutrition naturally creates a chemical expression of confidence, balance and optimism. When your mind is fed well by eating real food, healthy food, and not skipping meals or snacks, your whole being is in a state of greater hormonal happiness. Strive to eat a whole food meal and/or balanced snack approximately every 3 hours throughout the day.

-Become a morning person and eat your breakfast! Breakfast eaters are the healthiest people around. They have lower rates of heart disease and obesity along with greater levels of productivity, energy and positivity.

-Add nutritious foods rather than delete the not so nutritious choices.  Your body chemistry will “adjust” and begin to want healthier foods over the junk. For example, instead of snacking on a giant bag of potato chips, consider crunching on some celery topped with almond butter or peanut butter.

-Embrace health-affirming rituals that inspire and nourish you. Confidence and conviction grow every time you follow-thru and make good on your good intentions.

-Water your happiness. Our bodies are more than 75% water. Dehydration makes us more tired and hungry and as a result we often crave sugar and caffeine when instead we should be having a glass of water.

-Sweat your prayers daily with mindful movement and exercise. Dance, play, jump, hoola hoop –whatever moves you personally; it’s all good for your mind and body, memory and emotions. Exercise lowers stress, lifts positivity and raises every role you play in life, be it parent, spouse, teacher, friend, lover.

-Be grateful. Keep a gratitude journal and be healthier. Research suggests that this practice, combined with healthy eating and exercise, keeps us happier and healthier.

This month you may be romanced by a myriad of sexy and non-sustainable diets that promise results in mere days. Our egos and ‘lesser self’ love the idea of a quick fix or radical intervention to heal bellies and butts gone bad. To realize your greatest mission and life expression, get clear about what you are truly hungry for; greater peace, conviction with purpose and creative connection These experiences will nourish you greater than any one food or diet. Nourish and support your life with a clean, whole and sustainable eating and living plan. Trust that you are ready to take your body and your life from average to amazing.  Balance is the path and the journey is most delicious.

4 Diet & Fitness Trends of 2011 – Care To Healthy Living

By Lacy J. Hansen for DietsInReview.com

Every year brings its fads and trends to the health world and 2011 was no exception. Its possible that 2011 was dedicated to the over-scheduled, yet highly educated. Good solid fitness and diet information was more accessible than ever, and the ever-present excuse of being too busy for exercise was hard to use thanks to all the options that were available. Before 2012 brings its new trends, heres a look back at some of the hot health topics of 2011.

Gluten-Free Diets were no longer an obscurity of health food stores. 2011 brought the mass labeling of major food brands products. Walking the cereal aisle and reading gluten free is now a common sight. Celiac disease and gluten intolerance affects more than three million people and is a disorder that has received much more understanding this year. The disease or intolerance affects the digestive process due to gluten, the protein found in wheat, rye, and barley, and has afflicted many for a long time. Due to more research and mass publicity, living on a gluten-free diet was easier than ever in 2011.

High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) robbed many of excuses in 2011. It became possible to get intense and effective workouts this year in as little as 20 minutes. With programs such as P90X, Insanity, Jillian Michaels, and the new PINK Method many people were reaching their goals. HIIT focuses on a quick burst of intense exercise followed by brief periods of recovery. These brief series of exercises often replace the typical hour of cardio and weights in a traditional gym. Many found that in about 20 minutes they could get a fantastic workout and burn lots of calories. Twenty minutes in your living room verses an hour at the gym is hard to combat with excuses.

Health and Fitness Apps helped so many achieve their goals in 2011. Perhaps it was the year of the smart phone as its rare to find someone who doesnt have a computer right in their pocket. While theyre useful for checking Twitter and Facebook, they also became an alternative to nutritionists and personal trainers this year. With countless fitness apps that can track your workouts and a plethora of apps that can track your calories and nutrition we all became much more informed.

Alternative Diets allowed us to accept no excuses in 2011. This year the public made it clear we want to know what were eating. We want to know where it came from and what process it went through before it was served to us and our children. As a result, many were frustrated with the over-processing our food goes through and began their unique journeys on raw diets, juicing diets, vegan diets, and the Paleo diet, or caveman diet.

As the public learned of many food and product recalls such as ground turkey, melon, and even Tylenol, a rise in more local consumption resulted. If the processing plant, or the middle man, is skipped there is less question about where our food came from. Farmers markets, and local farms saw a spike in popularity for products such as produce, meat, and eggs.

2011 was a busy year, but it seems we found a way to still make the best of our health. Information was literally at our fingertips along with effective resources. Heres to 2012 breaking down even more health barriers and being our happiest and healthiest yet!

Christmas 2011 & New Year 2012 Open House

They called themselves “Kementerian Penerangan, Komunnikasi Dan Kebudayaan Malaysia” a government body to inform the rakyat of right and correct information,  but how come “Mengucapkan Selamat Menyambut Tahun Baru 2011” It seem the Kementerian still dreaming in 2011. Ha! Ha! What a shame because they always tell on news or media that “Every piece of information that to be disseminated must correct !

You might want to argue that this notice was not the fault of the Kementerian. It is the fault of the staff of PWTC. Ya.. this might be true….. but don’t tell me that non of the Kementerian staff ever notice it? If I can, why can’t they?

Not a big deal anyway, I pointed this out because they belong to Barisan Nasional” (BN) but they are “forgiven” because they have an open house today at PWTC, Dewan Merdeka. HAPPY NEW YEAR, EVERYBODY !

Aha! Finally in Dewan Merdeka, on the large billboard, they manage to disseminate the right information. Even if it is wrong, I guessed no one will bother as everybody busy eating for FREE!
