Six something in the evening, I saw an unbelievable headline sent to my email account. That moment I still using dial-up service from TMnet. Not yet broadband. The headline stated “Leslie Cheung Jumped To His Death!” I said “What?” Wait a minute, today date is 1st April, 2003. It is an April Fool day. It this a joke or what? Anyhow curiosity always killed the cat, as I clicked on the link and it seem real. To double confirm, I did some search on the search engine and it confirmed what I initially have doubt. It seem all news portal from Hong Kong carried the headline news. It leave me stunned and shocked for a while. In my mind many questions pop up. “Why he do that?” He is successful singer cum actor. He is good looking, have many women fans and he seem so perfect in every way but why he end his life in such manner? All those are unanswered question pop in my mind.

HK Star Leslie Cheung Commits Suicide

Hongkong pop star and actor Leslie Cheung leapt to his death from a five-star hotel in Hong Kong Tuesday. Local radio RTHK and two television stations carried the report that the heart throb jumped from a building in Hongkong’s Central District.

Hong Kong legend star Leslie Cheung Kwok-wing jumped to his death in Hong Kong Tuesday.Though many people had expected it to be an egregious joke on the Fool’s Day, the police has confirmed the 46-year-old’s death.Police sources also say Cheung left a suicide note, indicating the tragedy was caused by some emotional problem.

The well-known actor, known as Zhang Guorong in the mainland, starred in the acclaimed film “Farewell My Concubine” directed by mainland director Chen Kaige in 1993. In the film, he played a Peking opera actor who experienced bitterness and frustration in his whole life, especially in love affairs, and committed suicide in the end.

The film scooped a series of awards that year, including the prestigious Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Other popular movies starring Cheung include the gangster movie “A Better Tomorrow” in 1986, a gay-themed movie “Happy Together” in 1997 and “The Phatom Lover” in 1995. Cheung was also noted as one of the few Asian male stars to play openly gay characters.
